An evergreen, tender perennial, it prefers well-draining soil and doesn't love wet feet combined with freezing temps. In very cold, wet areas, it can easily be grown as an annual. We find it to be fast-growing and a wonderful addition to our kitchen herb garden, used to season flatbreads and vegetables, and crushed in olive oil, it makes a lovely dip for bread.
