Goldilocks Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Goldilocks')

Goldilocks Hinoki Cypress is a bright evergreen conifer valued for its lemon-yellow foliage, strong central leader, and refined upright form. Its bold golden color brings year-round interest to foundation beds, conifer gardens, mixed borders, specimen plantings, and informal evergreen screens. This selection has a denser and more uniform habit than some older golden Hinoki Cypress forms, making it useful where a polished conifer with real landscape presence is needed. With full sun to partial shade, moist well-drained soil, and room to mature, Goldilocks Hinoki Cypress adds strong color, texture, and structure to larger managed landscapes.

Distinctive Features

Goldilocks Hinoki Cypress forms a broad upright evergreen with a strong central leader, sturdy branching, and dense sprays of bright lemon-yellow foliage. The foliage is especially vivid on sun-exposed growth, while shaded interior foliage may show softer yellow-green to green tones that add depth. Compared with many smaller golden Hinoki Cypress cultivars, this selection develops into a larger, more dramatic conifer over time. This cultivar is grown primarily for its bright foliage color, refined structure, and evergreen presence, with small cones rarely contributing significant ornamental value in managed landscapes.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade, with brighter light supporting the strongest lemon-yellow foliage color.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and performs poorly in constantly wet, compacted, or very dry conditions.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to prevent stress and foliage browning.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 8, with best performance in protected sites that avoid harsh drying winds and extreme heat.
  • Mature Size: Typically reaches about 15 to 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide with age, with size depending on climate, site conditions, and pruning.
  • Habit: Forms a large, broad upright evergreen conifer with a strong central leader, dense branching, and bright golden foliage sprays.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a golden evergreen focal point in front yards, foundation beds, entry gardens, conifer gardens, or open mixed borders where its bright foliage can stand out year-round.
  • Specimen Planting: Feature as a standalone conifer where its lemon-yellow foliage, upright form, and refined branching can be appreciated through every season.
  • Foundation Planting: Plant near larger foundations where a substantial golden evergreen can add height, color, and structure without relying on seasonal flowers.
  • Mixed Border: Pair with dark green conifers, broadleaf evergreens, flowering shrubs, ornamental grasses, and perennials for contrast in color and texture.
  • Screening: Use in loose grouped plantings or informal evergreen screens where moderate to large height, year-round cover, and bright foliage color are desired.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water deeply during the first few seasons to establish roots, then water during prolonged dry spells as needed.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition while keeping mulch away from the trunk.
  • Pruning: Prune only lightly to shape or remove dead tips, avoiding hard cuts into old bare wood that may not regrow well.
  • Spacing: Provide enough room for its mature height and width, since this selection becomes a large conifer over time.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed in spring based on soil conditions, using a moderate approach that avoids excessive soft growth.
  • Site Protection: Plant where it has good air movement but some protection from harsh winter wind, reflected heat, and severe drought stress.

Why Choose Goldilocks Hinoki Cypress?

  • Lemon-Yellow Foliage: Displays bright golden evergreen foliage that adds strong year-round color to the landscape.
  • Refined Upright Form: Develops a broad upright habit with a strong central leader and a more uniform look than many golden Hinoki types.
  • Large Landscape Presence: Provides more scale and drama than dwarf conifer selections, making it useful as a substantial specimen or anchor plant.
  • Layered Texture: Offers dense foliage sprays that contrast beautifully with broadleaf shrubs, darker conifers, grasses, and flowering plants.
  • Evergreen Structure: Brings dependable color, height, and form through every season when planted in the right site.

Goldilocks Hinoki Cypress is an excellent choice for gardeners who want a golden evergreen with strong structure, bright color, and refined texture. Its lemon-yellow foliage, broad upright form, sturdy central leader, and year-round presence make it a polished option for specimen plantings, conifer gardens, foundations, mixed borders, and informal screens with moist well-drained soil.

Jone's Tome
This book seems more likely to be enjoyed by literary academics than by folks looking for a good story. While Henry Fielding is indeed a learned man of letters and does write in a fine and high style with many subordinate clauses, the actual substance thereof is no better than more earthy pedestrian fare. To put it plainly, I found most of the book a rather tedious slog. This is my personal subjective opinion only as I do believe Henry Fielding is well esteemed by serious literary scholars who undoubtedly see the matter quite differently. I am judging this book purely by my own personal enjoyment of the actual narrative and plot construction, and by my difficulty in teasing out the subordinate clauses which are so bound up with this age of writing. Imagine a very learned and erudite professor trying to tell you a common bawdy tale, but taking forever to do it while using the most stuffy language. I had thought that my deeper background in reading many Victorian era novels would qualify me to enjoy this one, but the language was a little too dense to make it an enjoyable read. I was however able to follow the story as well as the side epistles the author directly addresses the reader with (which I find to be an annoying device also much used in that era). I did read the whole thing and did take pleasure in some parts, but I must confess my bias towards this earlier era of novel writing. It takes very learned men of their age and has them writing long-winded tales of inferior construction when compared against later centuries. I know this is not their fault any more than you can blame a champion athlete of his time for having his record broken decades later when methods have universally improved.

Text is nearly 300 years old…!!! 😅😅😅
Read this publication alongside Cliff Notes. It’s a fun book, but the Latin poems and phrases can be intimidating. In addition, watch the movie. It’s an old text, so utilize resources to develop your understanding. 📚📖📙📘📗📕

The book itself is five stars!
This is a review of the Oxford Classic Kindle edition. The book itself is one of the greatest novels ever written; this is maybe the third time I've read it. Fielding is a master of irony, by which I mean genuine irony, not the mean sarcasm that often passes for irony these days. Fielding is never mean-spirited. His irony is generous and his humor is benevolent. His characters are three-dimensional, never all good or all bad. Before reading this, I had been re-reading several Dickens novels, and the contrast is enormous. A Dickens villain is a villain to the core, and his heroes (and especially his heroines) are saints. Tom instead is a young man with many faults, but a great heart. Sophia, his beloved, is a genuinely good person, but she's got a certain fiery spirit, and has her moments of doubt and remorse. I advise you to read every word of this novel. It's divided into books, and the first chapter of each book is an address to the reader, expounding Fielding's theories on literature and on human nature. An impatient reader might be tempted to skip these, but that would mean missing a lot of worthwhile and enjoyable reading. I have some quibbles with the Kindle edition. There were some mistakes in the passage from print to pixels, but they were not excessive. The biggest problem is that the excellent notes often have a reference to another note, with the page number, e.g., a note might be only "See note on page 85." As the book proceeds, more and more of the notes are references to earlier notes. However, there is never a link to these earlier notes, and when reading a Kindle, finding the note on page 85 is not an easy matter. Other than that, the Kindle edition is a pleasure to read.
