Introducing the Yucca elephantipes, known as Spineless Yucca, which is a popular indoor and outdoor Yucca plant known for its striking appearance and low-maintenance nature. Besides Yucca elephantipes, this plant is commonly referred to as the Giant Yucca, Soft-tip Yucca, Yucca gigantea, or Stick Yucca.

Native to Central America, the Yucca elephantipes gets its name from its resemblance to an elephant's foot. The thick, branched trunks of this air-purifying spineless yucca thicken over time, giving it that unique elephant-like appearance. As for the name "Spineless Yucca," it refers to the fact that, unlike other Yucca species, this particular plant doesn't have sharp spines on its leaves.

This resilient plant has gained popularity worldwide for its unique features and ability to thrive in various environments.

It is well-adapted to hot and dry climates, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and desert-themed gardens.

The Spineless Yucca is characterized by its thick, woody trunk and long, sword-shaped leaves.

These leathery blue-green leaves have smooth edges, lacking the sharp spines typically found on other Yucca plants.

The plant's architectural form and spiral rosettes of foliage make it an eye-catching addition to any space.

In ideal conditions, the slow-growing Spineless Yucca plants can reach impressive heights of up to 30 feet outdoors. However, when grown indoors as a houseplant, it usually stays more compact, reaching around 6 to 8 feet in height.

The flowers of Spineless Yucca elephantipes produce beautiful white or cream-colored blooms on tall stalks known as inflorescences. These white flowers are bell-shaped and appear in clusters during the summer months. The flowers are edible, high in calcium and potassium, and can be used in salads. While the plant can flower indoors, it is relatively rare and requires specific conditions, including ample sunlight and proper care.

The Spineless Yucca can be propagated through various methods, including stem cuttings and offsets. Stem cuttings can be taken from the main trunk or branches of mature plants, allowing the cut end to dry before planting it in well-draining soil. Offsets, or "pups," are small plantlets that grow at the base of the parent plant. These can be carefully separated and replanted to establish new plants.

Watering Needs

The Yucca elephantipes Spineless Yucca is a hardy and low-maintenance plant when it comes to watering. It has adapted to survive in arid environments, so it prefers drier soil. When watering your Spineless Yucca, it's important to strike a balance to prevent overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

In the spring and summer, during the growing season, you can water your Yucca elephantipes once every two weeks. Before watering, make sure the top inch or so of the soil is dry. When watering, give it a thorough soak, allowing the water to penetrate deep into the soil. Afterward, allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. This helps mimic the plant's natural habitat and prevents the roots from sitting in soggy soil.

In the winter months, when the plant is in its dormant phase, you can reduce watering frequency. Water your Spineless Yucca only when the soil is completely dry, which may be once every four to six weeks. Remember, it's always better to underwater than to overwater this resilient plant.

Keep in mind that factors like temperature, humidity, and the type of pot and soil used can affect watering needs. Always monitor the moisture level of the soil and adjust your watering schedule accordingly. With a little attention and care, your Yucca elephantipes will thrive and bring a touch of natural beauty to your space!

Light Requirements

When growing indoors, the Spineless Yucca thrives in bright, indirect light. It enjoys being near a window where it can receive plenty of filtered sunlight throughout the day. However, it's important to avoid placing it in direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves. If you don't have a well-lit area, don't worry. The Spineless Yucca is also tolerant of lower light conditions and can still grow, although it may not be as lush.

When planted outdoors, the Spineless Yucca elephantipes prefer full sun or light shade. It can tolerate direct sunlight for 6-8 hours a day, but it also appreciates some shade during the hottest parts of the day, especially in hotter climates. If you live in an area with harsh, intense sunlight, providing some afternoon shade can help protect the plant from sunburn.

Remember, it's always a good idea to gradually acclimate your Yucca elephantipes to different light conditions if you're moving it from indoors to outdoors or vice versa. Sudden changes in light can shock the plant and lead to stress. So, take it slow and allow the plant to adjust gradually.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Yucca elephantipes prefers sandy, well-drained sandy soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive. As an okay alternative, you can create your own potting mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

The Spineless Yucca is a relatively low-maintenance plant when it comes to fertilizing. During the growing season, once a year in the spring, you can fertilize your Yucca elephantipes with a balanced (5-10-5), water-soluble NPK fertilizer. Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength to avoid overfertilization. Apply the fertilizer to moist soil, as this helps prevent root burn.

In the winter months, when the plant is in its dormant phase, you can reduce or even stop fertilizing altogether. The Spineless Yucca doesn't require as much nutrient input during this time.

Remember, it's always a good idea to follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging and adjust the frequency and strength of fertilization based on the specific needs of your plant. With the right soil and occasional fertilization, your Yucca elephantipes will thrive and bring a touch of natural beauty to your space!

Hardiness Zones & More

When growing indoors, your Spineless Yucca elephantipes is widely grown as a houseplant, making it well-suited for indoor environments. It can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, ideally between 60°F and 80°F. It's important to keep the plant away from drafts or sudden temperature fluctuations, as it prefers a stable indoor climate. As for humidity, the Spineless Yucca is quite adaptable and can tolerate average indoor humidity levels. If the air in your home is particularly dry, you can increase humidity by using a humidifier or placing this house plant on a tray filled with water and pebbles.

When grown outdoors, the Spineless Yucca is best suited for USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11. It can withstand temperatures as low as 25°F but may suffer damage or die back if exposed to prolonged freezing temperatures. In terms of temperature, the Spineless Yucca thrives in warm climates with temperatures ranging from 70°F to 90°F. It can tolerate higher temperatures as well, but providing some shade during the hottest parts of the day can help protect the plant.

As for humidity, these hardy plants are relatively drought-tolerant and can adapt to different humidity levels, including lower humidity in arid regions.

Remember, while the Spineless Yucca is adaptable to a range of conditions, it's important to provide it with optimal temperature and humidity levels to promote healthy growth and prevent stress. With the right care, your Yucca elephantipes will thrive, whether indoors or outdoors!

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Yucca elephantipes (Spineless Yucca) is a stunning plant with a thick trunk and long, sword-shaped leaves. Unlike other Yucca species, it lacks sharp spines, making it safer and easier to handle. This plant can grow up to 30 feet tall outdoors, but indoors it typically reaches around 6 to 8 feet in height. The Spineless Yucca produces beautiful white or cream-colored bell-shaped flowers during the summer. When it comes to Yucca elephantipes care, make sure it gets plenty of bright, indirect sunlight and waters it sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. It thrives in well-draining soil and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures.

With its striking appearance and low-maintenance nature, the Spineless Yucca is a fantastic choice for both indoor and outdoor spaces.

4 years on - Still - A very good printer, if you can ignore its demands to update firmware
Style: WF-7840, Set: DUAL TRAY (500 sheets)/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
Summary: It is an excellent printer (4.6 out of 5) if you don't mind its constant requirements to update the firmware, which I have not since the day I bought it. I have had this printer for over a year. It has printed close to 5,000 pages of different sizes, papers, colors and document types. As someone said in the other posts (a big thank you), firmware update is only to drive users to get Epson's proprietary ink cartridges. When the printer harasses me to update the firmware, I just keep on ignoring it. Epson does a good job to harass you both on the printer and computer - just ignore it. Pros: 1. Only printer for <$500, which could print Ledger paper (11x17), which was a must for me. This thing prints beautiful and very crisp AutoCAD drawings. The lineweights and scales are phenomenal. 2. Excellent printing quality using stock and generic print cartridges. The printer can be really customized to get the right tones and textures for your print. Works very well with heavy stock papers and photo papers. I am yet to try any stickers, but I do not foresee any issues with it. 3. Good printing speed. It is not blazing like the commercial printers you find in the offices, but it is very fast for what it does. 4. Excellent connectivity. I had no issues with using either Ethernet or wireless. The printer can print on my Windows devices and Mac machine. I do not print from my phone, so cannot comment on that. 5. Heavy duty. The printer has printed approx. 5,000 pages so far without any troubles. I have not seen it overheat nor do any weird activities when it is printing. Indifferent: 1. Scanning. While scanning quality is very good, the direct scan option is cumbersome. You cannot use the scan button on the printer to scan into the computer disk. You have to go to the computer and activate the scan software to perform scanning. This can be an issue, if you have a setup where your office is on one floor and the printer is on another, like I have in my home. Cons: 1. Heavy. This thing is decently heavy and bulky. Don't try to keep on moving it or have it in your mobile office. Also, make sure to have a good sturdy and stable table. The printer twerks, jerks, sashays, parries. 2. Constant harassment to update the firmware. It can sometime be very annoying, but that's a small price to pay, if you get to ignore it. Look at the bigger picture. Price: When I bought it, the price was just below 3 bills, I understand it has gone up by half a bill (however, I am seeing the price going >$400 on some occasions). The new price of 3 and a half is not bad given the shape of the economy and supply chain issues. Also, the OEM cartridges (812) are cheaper at Staples than trying to Subscribe and Save here. Bottom-line: A very good printer, if you ignore and disprove its petulance to update itself. Update 3/23/2023 - I have had it now for over 2 years. The printer continues to print flawlessly and as of now has little under 10,000 pages printed of different sizes and paper weights. It still begs to update its firmware, which I have not done since its purchase. The only wishlist item I have for this printer is if it were to come with the Epson ink-tank. Update 3/28/2024 - Three years into it I have, still not updated it. The printer continues the work. I have now printed about 12,000 pages. In December, after I replaced all my cartridges, it started missing colors' tones, textures, and locations. Did full printer head alignment and cleaning twice (instructions are clear on the printer screen under Settings-> Maintenance menu). Printed test pages, and now it is working flawlessly. Update 3/20/2025 - Marks 4 years of running this printer. Definitely the least amount of pages printed annually - about 1,500. No firmware update performed and it still cries to update. Still running strong on both inks - generic and branded. There is a seller on eBay that offers XL cartridges for the colored ones too. Definitely worth giving a shot. If you are in a market for a prosumer printer consider this one in your list, if you can get it below $300.

Back with Epson after 5 year break of 2 Decades of Epson usage
Style: WF-7840, Set: DUAL TRAY (500 sheets)/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
Monster of a printer/scanner/all-in-one. Love it so far. No issues, I just need to get used to all the options. I have it for my home office and business. I veered away from Epson 5 years ago after 2 decades of Epson printers but I am happy I am back with Epson. Jet ink, one needs to print color every one or 2 weeks or the jets may clog on any ink jet printer. I have been there many times..... test print if needed.

EPSON PRINTER WILL NOT PRINT-BEWARE PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU PURCHASE.
Style: WF-7840, Set: DUAL TRAY (500 sheets)/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
The first thing I have to comment on is the number of firmware updates Epson insists on sending to their printers. But its not to make the printer operate better, it to keep you from using an after market remanufactured print cartridge. They are absolutely ridiculous to the point of anal trying to stop people from using a remanufactured ink cartridge. They are constantly updating the chips on their ink cartridges so its so, very difficult to use anything but a genuine Epson new print cartridge. Now there was a class action lawsuit against Epson because of this and Epson lost the lawsuit and was ordered by the court to stop making it impossible to use remanufactured (refilled) ink cartridges, but Epson is ignoring the court order. NO OTHER COMPANY REQUIRES YOU USE THEIR INK CARTRIDGES LIKE EPSON. I have always used genuine factory cartridges in ALL MY PRINTERS, the Epson I explain below never had a remanufacture ink cartridge put in it ever. I would never ever recommend a friend or family member to ever purchase an Epson printer. If you print with varied print specifications like paper size or specify a tray to print from YOU DO NOT WANT THIS PRINTER OR ANY EPSON PRINTER. First of all the printer is slow as molasses. It does not print anywhere the speed they claim. The Epson software and print drivers are very badly flawed. I have been trying for a little over a year to figure out the best ways to get a print job done, and not get the warning "your paper does not match your paper tray selection" . Time and time again I have specified 11x17 paper, which is in tray 2, (only fits in tray 2) and I get this darn warning time and time again. "Your paper does not match your paper tray selection". I have gone to the extent of removing paper completely from tray 1 and purposely specify tray 2 to in my printer properties, and I get the darn dialog box warning anyway. I called Epson customer support and it is like talking to a wall every single time I call them. THE CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS USELESS. So I unplug the printer and let it sit for 10 minutes. I then remove all print jobs from the que. With the same exact properties as the previous attempt sometimes it would print. Then, the other issue with this printer, is I continue to get paper feed errors. I remove both trays and I shine a flashlight in the empty tray spaces and there is no paper in either tray space or in the plastic feed guides. I then remove the back cover which totally opens up all the paper paths. Still no jammed paper is found. I meticulously put the back cover on and put the trays back in. Then resend the print command, but still, it gives paper feed error. I take it all apart again, I remove the printer from the stand and move it to the kitchen counter which is much higher which makes it easier to look inside at every nook and cranny. Still no jammed or misfed paper. Put all back together again, do everything exactly like I did it before and sometimes it will print, and sometimes I get a feed error. I have had to take the darn thing apart as many as 3 times to get it to print without a paper jam error. I DO NOTHING DIFFERENT THAN I HAD DONE EVERY TIME, but finally it prints. I called customer support at least 4 times. The response I usually get, “that is impossible you are missing a piece of paper that was jammed. “ This last time I took 14 pictures of all the paper pathways from front and back of the printer. I called and explained what was going on, again, and told them I wanted to send the pictures, but they would not let me. I hung up, I removed the printer from the stand and threw it as far as I could out the back door of the house, which I should have done after the second time occurred on any of the issues. That would have kept me from wasting my time and getting totally used up with their customer support at Epson. But this last time I had a deadline which was dropped on my shoulders by State Farm Homeowners insurance with no prior warning, and I HAD to get a printed copy down to my agent. I ended up driving to Office Depot and printing it there. Now I will say one thing, NO COMPANY HAS A PRICE LIKE EPSON HAS, on a printer like this that will print both 11x17 or as big as 13x19 and 18x22 inch paper. The next best prices is over $2000.00. To add insult to injury, I have the Amazon extended warranty option on everything I buy from Amazon, but Asurion ( that’s who does the Amazon extend warranty) would not cover it because they said it was a factory defect. I have asked for proof and they said they would send me documentation.

Pleasantly surprised at the size of this machine
Style: WF-7840, Set: DUAL TRAY (500 sheets)/FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
This is an amazing printer!! I was surprised at how large it is because I assumed it was a smaller sized unit. I guess I didn’t check the dimensions before I bought it. That’s okay, though, I made room for it. Very easy to set up and connect to the internet. Print quality is awesome and the print/copy speed is great! Very happy with my purchase.
