Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower (Echinacea x hybrida 'Balsomsed')

Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower brings bold red color to sunny gardens with a compact, sturdy habit that fits beautifully into borders, containers, and pollinator plantings. Its saturated flower color gives it strong visual impact, while the manageable size makes it easy to use in smaller spaces and more structured perennial designs. This variety offers the durability gardeners expect from echinacea while keeping a tidy, dependable form through the season. It is an excellent choice for adding long-lasting bloom, vivid summer color, and wildlife value to sunny landscapes.

Distinctive Features

This hybrid coneflower produces large red flowers with orange-red tones and broad petals surrounding a prominent dark cone, creating a bright and energetic display through the warm season. The blooms are held on sturdy, upright stems above dark green foliage, giving the plant a strong and balanced look in the garden. It typically matures about 24 to 26 inches tall and 16 to 22 inches wide, forming a compact upright clump with good flower coverage. Bloom usually begins in early summer and continues through much of summer, with additional flowers possible into early fall when spent blooms are removed.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Plant in full sun for best flowering, strongest stems, and the most compact habit.
  • Soil: Grow in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil and avoid poorly drained or consistently wet planting sites.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide moderate to low water, allowing the soil to dry somewhat between waterings.
  • Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 9.
  • Habit: This variety has a compact, upright, clump-forming habit with sturdy stems and a tidy outline.
  • Bloom Season: Expect flowering from early summer through summer, with some continued bloom possible into early fall.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use its vivid red blooms as a focal point in sunny borders where bold color can energize and anchor surrounding plant combinations.
  • Borders: Place it near the front or middle of perennial beds where its compact size and saturated flower color can be appreciated up close.
  • Containers: Grow it in large patio containers for a colorful, manageable display with strong seasonal impact.
  • Pollinator Gardens: Add it to butterfly and pollinator plantings to support bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects through the bloom season.
  • Cut Flowers: Harvest the blooms for fresh arrangements and leave some seed heads later for added texture and bird interest.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the first growing season, then water mainly during extended dry periods once established.
  • Deadheading: Remove faded flowers to encourage continued bloom and keep the plant looking tidy through the season.
  • Feeding: Apply compost or only light fertilizer in spring, since overly rich soil can reduce the plant's sturdy, compact growth.
  • Cleanup: Cut stems back in late fall or late winter, or leave some seed heads standing briefly for added texture and seasonal interest.
  • Tolerance: Once established, this variety handles heat, humidity, and periods of dryness with dependable performance.

Why Choose Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower?

  • Strong Red Flower Color: Its saturated blooms bring bold summer color that stands out clearly in mixed plantings.
  • Compact Habit: The manageable size fits easily into smaller beds, front-of-border positions, and decorative containers.
  • Sturdy Stems: Strong upright growth helps the flowers hold well in the garden and in fresh arrangements.
  • Pollinator Appeal: The blooms attract bees and butterflies, while later seed heads can add wildlife interest.
  • Reliable Performance: This is a sturdy perennial that delivers dependable bloom and structure in sunny garden conditions.

Sombrero Salsa Red Coneflower is a smart choice for gardeners who want vivid flower color, compact growth, and dependable season-long performance in one easy perennial. Its tidy habit makes it especially useful in modern borders and smaller landscapes where every plant needs to contribute real value. In sunny beds, containers, and pollinator plantings, it delivers lasting seasonal beauty with straightforward care.

Clean product
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I only gave it 4 stars because of the smell. Of course it’s sunscreen so it’s going to have a chemical smell but this smell is just too strong for me. Other then that, it’s a great sunscreen. Does take some more rubbing in and be carful to rub it in really good or you’ll have white streaks all over your face. Leaves a bit of a white cast. You don’t need much.

Great quality

Thinksport SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc is a reliable, high‑protection option that feels lightweight and non‑greasy on the skin. It applies smoothly without leaving too much white cast for everyday use, and I love that it’s mineral‑based with zinc for strong UVA/UVB defense. Great for active days outdoors. Highly recommend for sensitive skin and safe sun coverage!

Brown skin approved!
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1), Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Does not leave a white cast, feels very light on the skin. Scanned on Yuka and was a 86/100 green zone! It’s so hard to find a sunscreen that isn’t trying to poison you, scanned all the sunscreen at Walmart and were rated a 1/100 through 6/100. Which brought me to Amazon. Thinksport has my vote on goodness and healthiness, would buy again!

My favorite... And I'm picky.
Size: 3 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I've become a little obsessed with sunscreen over the last past 5 years. I have olive skin and developed melasma after my first pregnancy. I learned the hard way that chemical sunscreens don't help if you have melasma - and they actually make the dark spots even worse. Also the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens (like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate) are absorbed by your skin, and may cause allergies, hormonal imbalance and be toxic overtime. After learning that, I started wearing only mineral sunscreen (active ingredient is zinc and/or titanium dioxide). These are not absorbed and works by creating a physical barrier that reflects the sun (some studies suggest that some nanoparticles of zinc may be absorbed by your skin, so to be really, really safe you should look for non-nano particles). After trying a few brands, I realized the sunscreens with only zinc in their formulas worked better than the blends with titanium dioxide, but this is just my personal preference I guess. And the higher the percentage of zinc, the better. Most pure mineral sunscreens out there are 10-ish % zinc, SPF 30, 40 min water resistant - which is ok. Thinksport goes beyond that: It's 20% non-nano zinc, SPF 50+, 80 min water resistant. It really can't get any better than that! The lotion is not extremely thick when compared to other sunscreens I've tried and I find it pretty easy to apply. As every zinc sunscreen, it does leave a little fine white cast, but honestly Thinksport is not bad at all! It smells nice, lightly citrusy - and the smell vanishes soon. And, it's not overpriced. Best I've tried so far.

Works but will Dry Out Your Skin
Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I am a swim instructor at an outdoor pool and this stuff DOES work. I can apply it at the beginning of a 5 hour shift and while I have experienced light tanning it has protected against burning completely without reapplication. The white cast is significant though I don't mind it aesthetically, I know its there for protection . It does rub off on things though so consider yourself warned. Major Con: it is incredibly drying, and the soap needed to scrub it off is A LOT. That coupled with chlorine is a lot for my skin . Still on my sunscreen journey.
