The Red Dragon Flower, botanically known as Huernia schneideriana, is a fascinating and increasingly popular flowering succulent admired for its unusual dragon-like blooms and sculptural stems. The stems usually grow upright when young but gradually begin to spread, trail, or droop as the plant matures, making it especially attractive in hanging baskets, shallow pots, and decorative containers.

Despite its cactus-like appearance, the Red Dragon Flower is not a true cactus. It is a soft-stemmed succulent with fleshy, water-storing stems that help it thrive in dry conditions. Its common name, “Dragon Flower,” comes from its dramatic, deep red, star-shaped flowers, whose textured petals and bold colors resemble the scales or open mouth of a mythical dragon.

Like many desert-adapted succulents, Huernia schneideriana has evolved to thrive in hot, arid, rocky environments.

Its thick green stems typically grow 12 inches tall and feature soft, tooth-like ridges that resemble tiny thorns, giving the plant its distinctive cactus-like look without the sharp spines.

The true highlight of this plant is its extraordinary flowers. The blooms are relatively small, usually 1 to 2 inches wide, but incredibly eye-catching and unforgettable.

Each flower displays a deep purple-black center surrounded by a velvety reddish-black interior and brownish-red exterior, creating a dramatic, almost otherworldly effect.

Its natural drought tolerance and resilient growth habit make it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced growers seeking a hardy, low-maintenance succulent.

Unlike many other members of the Huernia genus and carrion flower relatives, whose blooms can produce a strong, unpleasant odor, Huernia schneideriana has a much milder scent, making it far more suitable and enjoyable as an indoor houseplant.

When and How to Water Your Red Dragon Flower

The Red Dragon plant prefers light and infrequent watering, much like the dry conditions of its native Eastern African habitat. This succulent grows best when watered using the “soak and dry” method, where the soil is watered thoroughly and then allowed to dry out completely before the next watering.

Water your Red Dragon Flower about every 2 to 3 weeks during the active growing season, then reduce watering once a month in dormant season.

In the spring and summer, you may need to water your red dragon flower more frequently as it actively grows. Always use a pot with drainage holes and allow the soil to fully dry between waterings to keep the plant healthy.

In the fall and winter, you should reduce the frequency of watering to prevent overwatering and potential root issues. Wrinkled or slightly soft stems are common signs that it may need watering.

Remember, it's always better to underwater than to overwater Huernia succulents like the red dragon flower. This will help ensure the health and longevity of your Huernia schneideriana.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Red Dragon Succulent

When growing indoors, place the red dragon flower on a sunny windowsill or near a south facing window where it can receive around 4 to 6 hours of sunlight daily.

If the stems start turning yellow or brown, it may be getting too much direct sun.

Move it slightly away from the window or provide light shade during the hottest part of the day.

When growing outdoors, it thrives in bright sunlight or partial shade and grows best with around 4 to 6 hours of direct morning sunlight daily.

Since intense afternoon sun can be too harsh for its delicate stems, place it in a location with bright, filtered light during the hottest part of the day.

If your Red Dragon Flower is not receiving enough light, it may become leggy and pale in color. In areas with limited natural sunlight, you can use a grow light to provide the extra light needed for healthy and compact growth.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The red dragon flowers favor very airy, sandy soil that drains well. Planting them in ordinary soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and most likely root rot. Ideally, you can use our specialized succulent potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates with organic mycorrhizae to support healthy root development and stronger growth.

When it comes to fertilizing your red dragon flower, it's best to do so sparingly. You can use a diluted, low nitrogen fertilizer or a balanced succulent fertilizer with an NPK ratio such as 5-10-5. Avoid over fertilizing, as too much fertilizer can damage the roots and lead to weak or leggy growth.

Hardiness Zone & More

In the United States, the red dragon flower is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 9 to 11.

It prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and thrives in warm, dry conditions, but should be protected from temperatures below 50°F.

As for humidity, it is well-adapted to dry and arid environments. It can tolerate low humidity levels, making it a great choice for drier climates or indoor environments with lower humidity.

How to Grow as an Indoor Houseplant

The Red Dragon Flower can adapt very well as an indoor houseplant when given enough light and warmth. Place it near a bright window where it can receive several hours of sunlight daily, preferably gentle morning sun combined with bright indirect light. East or south facing windows are usually the best spots.

Keep the plant in a warm area with temperatures between 65°F and 80°F, and protect it from cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F. It prefers low humidity and dry conditions, making it well suited for typical indoor environments.

Wildlife – Red Dragon Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

The Red Dragon Flower can attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, flies and small gnats. These insects help pollinate the blooms in nature. The flowers may also attract tiny beetles and other beneficial insects that are curious about the plant’s unique appearance.

According to ASPCA,  Huernia schneideriana is considered mildly toxic to pets and humans. It is best to keep the plant out of reach of curious pets and small children. Wearing gloves while pruning or propagating can also help prevent skin irritation.

How to Propagate Your Red Dragon Flower

You can propagate your plant through stem cuttings. The best time to propagate is during spring or summer when the plant is actively growing.

Use a clean, sharp knife or scissors to cut a healthy stem from the parent plant. Let the cutting dry and callous for 1 to 2 days before planting to help prevent rot. Place the cutting in a warm spot with bright indirect light while it develops roots. Within a few weeks, new roots and growth should begin to appear.

good hose
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 25-Foot
I installed it about 2 weeks ago, after reading negative reviews, I was prepared for the worse. I did as instructed, kept the thermostat sensor next to the water source and plugged both ends, however the middle of the body of the house was lightly still coiled. When I tried, the water was leaking from under the insulation, where connected to the water source, just as I saw it in the negative reviews. Then I remembered, the instruction clearly say, the house must be uncoiled, so I disconnected, and stretched it out completely in a straight line taking out any kinks, then I took the ends and plugged them in the outlet and inlet. Tested it again and NO LEAK, it works perfectly. That night, it was 25F degrees, the hose was warm to the touch and no leak (the pressure in my sink faucet doubled, I suppose my old hose was not as efficient as new one, etc...). So, it works. I must say, that the instructions, indicate that the heating element turns on below 50F degrees, my hose. turns on when it it is below 35F roughly, which is fine.

A company that stands behind its product
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 50-Foot
I bought one of these hoses at the end of January and it worked great right off the bat. However, fast forward to beginning of this month and the hose itself had failed, leaking water. I was out of Amazon's warranty window, so reached out to Camco directly for guidance on how to get it replaced. Fast forward a week and there's a brand new replacement hose delivered right to my door. Easy communication, fast turnaround and no questions asked (granted, the photos I provided were pretty clear as to the issue). So sure, its not ideal that the first one failed but in a world where it can be difficult to find a reliable brand - I feel very secure working with these guys and they earned my confidence. Hose works great btw. No issues with the connections leaking, water quality, or temperature. This is the one I'd buy again if/when I have to.

Great idea, but the quality control..
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 25-Foot
*TLDR, Too Long Didn't Read* Do Not waste your money. Failed right out of box. Leaked at above freezing temps With upstream pressure regulator. Did not test the heating feature due to the hose leaking from under the insulation sleeve somewhere. Very disappointed. Build your own or insulate well. If you do choose to take a gamble with this item then Thoroughly test it as soon as it arrives and take pics/ video. Would share the video but it won't upload correctly, (not too tech savvy), but I know plumbing, mechanical, etc. The long review: Other reviews have mentioned the hose leaking or failing Even with pressure regulators (which we use and replace regularly) - this is factual. Failed on first hookup Before it reached the freezing temps. Please Do Not Buy this sub par constructed item. It's a shame really since we have bought a lot of Camco branded items over the years. Our unit seemed ok out of the box (bought on sale weeks before the cold season and didn't need it til about 6 days after the return window closed). I should have tested as soon as it arrived but Optimistically Trusted with the 'name brand' mindset. Amazon was courteous, but did not do anything for us except refer us to Camco to try to get them to replace the defective hose. Take our hard learned lesson and many others and Do Not buy these products. Either research youtube for making one from scratch yourself or over insulate your water lines/ hoses and set everything to drip during sub freezing temps (mostly applying to full time rvers or camping in colder climates). We bought the 1in diameter 1/2 in thick 6ft foam pipe insulation (about R2 insul value), foil backed fiberglass pipe insulation (R6 insul value), and then waterproofed with an outer sheath of reflectix and zip ties from lowe's and have had no issues down to 18 degrees with lower wind chills (installed on the fresh water hose, pressure regulator, and water in line filter from spigot post to camper and also wrapped the spigot for good measure). Our rig is 4 season/ belly insulation and sheet metal bottom no skirt. **Invest in the two way hose splitter off the spigot, add quick disconnects, then a "Freeze Miser" or similar product** It will automatically open and drip before it reaches freezing temps to prevent the water line from freezing. Easy to unbox, easy to install (like a regular hose), Only After testing for leaking or defects plug into appropriate safe and rated outlet. Not super heavy (25ft). Keeps a semi coiled memory after unboxing but seems to relax and become somewhat flexible. Nice color. Looks quality at first glance (even though several reviewers like us have had defective units).

Highly recommended
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 25-Foot
I’ve been using this hose for several years now. Plug it in and it heats the hose whenever the temperature drops to 40 or less. My hose has made it through several freezes and works 24/7 with no problems. I will buy another when the times comes.

BOUGHT 2 AND BOTH TERRIBLE
Style: -20-Degree, Size: 50-Foot, Style: -20-Degree, Size: 50-Foot
I bought two of these products 6 months apart from each other (march 2024 and October 2024) both brand new out of the box leaked from this hose connection fitting and is not fixable by replacing the standard hose gasket. Thought maybe it was just the first one was just a dud. It was not, the 2nd one was exactly the same and leaked out of BOTH connection fittings aswell. Yes i tried new gaskets, thread tape / dope, trying to tighten it a bit more, pressure reducer down to abt 35 psi. None of which worked. This product has potential of being good but they used such a low quality connection that it ruins the whole thing. Havent gotten to the point where Ive used it below freezing for more than 1 night so I cant comment on the freeze proofness of it. Tested it with an electrical meter and it uses 690W when plugged in and below the temp rating. I ended up having to repair the hose myself because I couldnt order a chinese brand one instead without running out of time before freezing temps (photographed repair of what is necessary for this to funtion propertly out of the box) but for the price point this hose is at I expect it to last at least 2 years without issues at least, I especially DO NOT expect it to leak being brand new out of the box. If you are going to do the repair you have to carefully cut the insulated sleeve back a few inches without cutting the hose or heated wire and then cut the original hose connector off. At that point you can use pretty much any hose repair threaded connector with a hefty hose clamp nice and tight (dont strip the hose clamp threads though). After spending another 15 min on the repair and $10 in parts you will then have a functional hose for at least 1 week. We'll see how long it lasts now.
