This event Mew was distributed to Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire players via serial code given away at various locations in select countries to celebrate the Pokémon 20th Anniversary. The serial codes could be used to redeem this Mew from January 27 to May 31, 2016.
Other serial codes were also given away inside the Pokémon Trainer Club newsletter, which was sent out starting June 10, 2016. These serial codes could be used to obtain this Mew from June 10 to August 31, 2016. Reportedly, once a game system already received a Mew from the previous serial code, there is no double-dipping this event distribution.
In Europe, this event Mew was also distributed via serial code MEW2016. The serial code could be used from June 7 to 30, 2016.
What makes this event Pokémon special?
Mew cannot be caught in-game in XY and ORAS, and just like most Mythical Pokémon can only be obtained through event distributions.
