Known for its striking stature and impressive flower clusters that are adored by pollinators, Aralia spinosa is a must-have for any property.

Reaching heights of 5-10 feet and spreading to a similar width over time, this plant forms a dramatic focal point. Thorns cover the stems, earning it the moniker 'Hercules club.' Large, compound leaves, which can reach 5' in length, emerge in spring.

The fabulously massive heads of creamy-white flower clusters open in late summer and are buzzing with pollinators. Flowers are followed by clusters of deep purple berries that mature into late summer and early fall. Songbirds feast on the berries.

Hardy in zones 4 through 9,  devil's walking stick is a great choice if you're looking for something unusual or to enhance the ecological value of your land. Aralia spinosa is carefree and requires minimal maintenance. Grown in full sun to part shade, its great for naturalizing and can eventually spread over time to form a small thicket.

Though the book overall is a bit "warped" and several of the maps are mis-printed or mis-cut as to make them unusable. 3 bad out of 300 - not horrible - again at the price I paid. If the subject interest you - I'd suggest getting - but not a "must have".
